I dream of having a friend like artist Gaston Longchamp. To have received one of his illustrative letters like those preserved at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington would have been a treasure. Gaston learned his craft in Paris at the foot of Georges Seurat, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Signac, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Raoll Duffy, Pablo Picasso and many others. It was stunning to me to learn recently the expressionist painter called Kintnersville in Upper Bucks his home for more than 40 years. All the while, he produced prolific works of art that remained concealed. You could make a good case he should be ranked among Bucks’ great artists. Why he isn’t is a mystery to me. ....
NewAge Industries is a manufacturer of plastic and rubber tubes and hoses, and related supplies. In 2006 it became an employee-owned company through an employee stock ownership plan. Since then, Baker has been a proponent of ESOPs; he co-founded and chairs the Pennsylvania Center for Employee Ownership and is a board member of the Employee Ownership Expansion Network. “ESOPs are advantageous for both employees, who gain ownership in the business, and employers, who will be able to attract and retain talented employees, develop a succession plan and see tax benefits as well,” he said. “My goal is to increase awareness and provide educational programs for this business model and other employee-employer partnerships through the Baker Center. ....
In a sense, Bristol lucked out. That’s what crossed my mind as I followed a winding trail between Otter Creek’s tidal basin and the municipal parking lot. The basin once was the terminus of the Delaware Canal when it opened in 1832 and made Bristol a busy coal shipping port. As I walked past several historical markers, I was mindful of Albright Zimmerman’s detailed history of the canal. He pays close attention to a 19th century civil engineer who gave Atlanta its name and designed Pennsylvania’s famous Horseshoe Curve rail line. J. Edgar Thomson also mapped out a plan to extend the canal another 19 miles to Philadelphia’s seaport. It would have created a faster means of getting coal from upstate Pennsylvania to market. Had that occurred, Bristol’s coal-driven prosperity as an export terminal at Otter Creek no doubt would have been stunted. It nearly happened. ....
Now that unemployment benefits have resumed for Pennsylvania’s self-employed workers, the state is working on fixing glitches that have slowed the claim process. Since the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program reopened on Jan. 22, the Department of Labor and Industry has received reports of problems with filing claims, Acting Secretary Jennifer Barrier said in an update Tuesday. “While we know that payments were issued to many claimants over the past four days, we are also aware that some people have encountered issues. We understand the frustration of the claimants who’ve been waiting for their payments to resume we are frustrated too and are working to make it right,” Berrier said. ....
