While Sunderland remains in the state’s “red” category because of a surge in the number of people testing positive for COVID-19, the rest of the county’s towns have seen a decrease in those numbers.
Sunderland reported 33 new positive cases over the past two weeks, possibly because of the surge in positive cases at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, while Montague was the only town in Franklin County in the “yellow” or higher-risk category with 23 new cases reported in that time. Athol in Worcester County is also in the “yellow” with 43 new cases. Greenfield is the only town in the “green” or lower-risk category, with 23 cases reported over the past two weeks.

Franklin County and the North Quabbin region, for the most part, seemed to see a quieter couple of weeks as a whole when it came to reports of positive COVID-19 cases.
On New Year’s Eve, the state Department of Public Health reported that 22 of the Franklin County’s 26 municipalities are currently in the “gray” or lowest-risk category, with towns reporting anywhere from zero to eight cases since Dec. 17. Six towns report zero cases, while nine report fewer than five cases.

Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol was one of the first nursing homes in Worcester County to conduct a COVID-19 vaccination clinic for its residents and staff with CVS/Omnicare pharmacy, Assistant Administrator Michael Kachadoorian said.
“Nursing homes across the state have been paired with a pharmacy CVS or Walgreens and back in the fall when this program was announced, QVH signed up for it immediately,” he said. “We were notified of our clinic date of Dec. 28 just before the Christmas holiday.”
