What's 'close contact?' Erie County changes rules on school quarantine – again

The Erie County Health Department has loosened the rules on who has to quarantine when there’s a positive case of Covid-19 in school. Since September, the county has taken a conservative approach and ordered 14 days of quarantine for anyone who was in a classroom with an infected person for 60 minutes or more. But now, with lower transmission rates being found in the schools, Erie County has backed off those guidelines. Instead, it will require quarantine for anyone within 6 feet of an infected person for more than 10 minutes. That change should reduce the number of students and staff forced to miss out on in-person instruction – focusing just on those who came close to an infected person, rather than everyone in the room. It may also keep schools from having to close temporarily because too many staff are forced to quarantine at home.
