On Monday Iran carried out the execution, via hanging, of national-level wrestler Mehdi Ali Hosseini. The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) reported that Hosseini, who was from Andimeshk, was executed in Dezful prison. He was 30 years old.
Authorities charged Hosseini with murder in 2015, saying he killed someone during a mass brawl. Hosseini’s death sentence was upheld because the victim’s family declined the opportunity to grant him clemency. ....

Last September Iran followed through with its threat to execute Iranian national team wrestler Navid Afkari after he was charged with murdering a security agent. Human rights groups claim that the charges against Afkari were the result of a forced confession, brought about through torture.
Figures from the international wrestling community, as well as UFC President Dana White, spoke out against Iran in an attempt to pressure the country to stay Afkari’s execution. Despite these calls, Iran carried out the execution by hanging, per an official release. Afkari was 27-years-old. Activists in Iran dispute that Afkari was hanged, due to the beaten and bloodied condition of his body. ....

A special stamp has been released in Iran to mark the 53rd anniversary of the death of Gholamreza Takhti, the country’s 1956 Olympic wrestling champion.
Popularly nicknamed Jahān Pahlevān - The World Champion - because of his chivalrous behaviour and sportsmanship, he was the most popular athlete of Iran in the 20th century, although dozens of Iranian athletes have won more international medals than he did.
Takhti won his first Iranian title in 1950 and on his first trip abroad in 1951, he won a silver medal at the World Freestyle Championships in Helsinki - the first international medal ever gained by an Iranian wrestler. ....

A top U.S. State Department official came out swinging Sunday against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s plan to execute another wrestler, after Tehran’s rulers publicly hanged the champion wrestler Navid Afkari in September on widely criticized, trumped-up charges.

The execution of the decorated wrestler Mehdi Ali Hosseini is imminent.
