Two Birmingham natives who participated 60 years ago in the historic Freedom Rides told their stories to an inquisitive and admiring crowd Wednesday evening at the Birmingham Public Library.
Catherine Burks-Brooks and the Rev. Clyde L. Carter weren’t on the first two buses that left Washington, D.C., on May 4, 1961, that were attacked by pro-segregation mobs in Anniston and Birmingham. Two Birmingham police officers shot Sunday while trying to carry out a search warrant at the home of a double murder suspect have been identified.
Birmingham police officials identified the wounded officers as Officer Jacob Rouse, 28, and Officer Jeremy Dorr, 40. Two other officers were grazed in the gunfire.
Rouse joined the department five years ago. Dorr is a 16-year veteran. Both are members of the Tactical Operations Unit. ....

Two Birmingham officers remained hospitalized Wednesday after two police cruisers collided with each other during a chase.
Sgt. Rod Mauldin said the two officers are in stable condition and a third has been treated and release. All are expected to recover from their injuries.
