Standardbred Canada announced the winners of 2020 O’Brien Awards, which honour Canada’s best in harness racing over the past season, during a Virtual Gala videostreamed on standardbredcanada.ca on Sunday, January 31.
Held virtually due to the provincial lockdown in Ontario, this year marked the 32nd edition of the O’Brien Awards, named in honour of the late Joe O’Brien, an outstanding horseman and member of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
Richard Moreau added a record eighth O’Brien trophy to his mantle in the Trainer of the Year Category after a season which saw him top the earnings and win charts for Canadian trainers. Based in Puslinch, Ont., Moreau is one of the country’s busiest trainers, sending postward 1,604 starters that made 237 trips to the winner’s circle and earned more than $3.6 million in purses.

Street Gossip was a model of consistency in 2020, hitting the board in all eight of his starts earning him 2020 Ohio Two-Year-Old Trotting Colt of the Year honours.
Street Gossip, a son of Cash Hall out of the Yankee Glide mare The Young Princess, won four out of his eight races and collected a pair of second- and third-place finishes for trainer Virgil Morgan Jr. and owner Carl Howard and the Jesmeral Stables, earning $171,761.
Street Gossip was purchased in July by Howard and Jesmeral Stable after a third-place finish in a leg of the Ohio Sires Stakes. “I saw him racing in his first sire stakes race at Northfield Park. He was very competitive,” Morgan said. “I was elated once we got him. To see how good gaited he was and that we really had something to work with.”
Action Uncle picked up in 2020 where he left off in 2019, winning nine races on the way to being named the Ohio Harness Horsemen s Association s Three-Year-Old Trotting Colt of the Year.
Action Uncle, the son of Uncle Peter out of Action Broadway, started 10 times in 2020, winning nine and finishing second once. He earned $351,960 for trainer Virgil Morgan Jr. and owners Carl Howard, Joyce McClelland and Larry Wills.
In 16 career starts, Action Uncle has 12 wins, three second-place finishes and one third-place finish and has earned $577,535.
It is the second straight year that Action Uncle has won a Trotter of the Year award. Last year, he was named Ohio s Two-Year-Old Trotting Colt of the Year.
