DON LEMON, CNN HOST:  Good evening, everyone. We are live in Cincinnati, Ohio, tonight on the campus of Mount Saint JosephUniversity overlooking the Ohio River. This is a CNN town hall with the president of the United States, Joe Biden. I m Don Lemon.

Biden's Budget Steps up Spending for Criminal Justice Reform | Brennan Center for Justice

Expectations are high for President Biden to prioritize criminal justice reform. Just a few weeks ago, his fiscal year 2022 budget was released, and it includes Justice Department funding for state and local grant programs.
Our analysis has found some $1.3 billion earmarked for reform-related grants, which are one of the main tools the federal government has for spurring positive change at the state and local levels. The number represents a 78 percent increase from the previous year.
Community Violence Intervention and police hiring
Many justice reformers point out that there are effective non-law enforcement strategies for reducing violence. Biden’s budget goes big on one such set of strategies, including $100 million in new Community Violence Intervention initiative grant funds within DOJ and $100 million within the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). ....

Advocates for the formerly incarcerated tout reform agenda to state lawmakers


The North Carolina Second Chance Alliance, a criminal justice reform group, held a virtual day of advocacy on Tuesday, with attendees proposing a ten point policy agenda aimed at improving conditions for recently-incarcerated people.
Organizers screened a video with testimonies from members describing their experiences with reentry post-incarceration. Speakers discussed difficulty finding employment, being denied housing and the looming worry of court fines and fees.
“Just because you have an experience that might be a bad decision you may have made, you shouldn’t be punished for the rest of your life for that,” Alexander Williams, an organizer with the Second Chance Alliance said. “You deserve opportunities, you deserve equal access,  the quality of life that everybody else does.” ....
