Direccion Hidrografía nautical chart or maritime map detailing the China coast and the South China Sea from, roughly, Hong Kong and Macao south to Hue (Vietnam) and Luzon (the Philippines), thus embracing a highly-trafficked and critical trade and strategic channel in the 19th century (as today). The map focuses heavily on coastal maritime routes, but pushes inland along major river arteries, including a detailed mapping of the Pearl River Delta as far as Canton (Guangzhou). In Vietnam, several factorias antiguas are noted, underscoring early European trade activity. ....

Beijing s Yuanmingyuan, or the Old Summer Palace, has launched the third phase of its restoration project, Restoration 1860, to repair broken cultural relics.
Archaeologists started with restoring 24 cultural relics unearthed from Xiyang Lou, also known as Western Mansions, a European-style garden of marble monuments and glaze decorations. The worn appearance of glazed tiles and other decorative elements still reflect the colors from within, revealing the glory of the destroyed garden.
The relics include colored glaze pieces and a blue bowl with a dragon and phoenix made during the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1654-1722). They first repaired the missing parts and then wore them out so that the cultural relics look antiquated. ....

Seventy-nine years before American troops launched the landing operation at Inchon during the Korean War, U.S. troops were involved in another amphibious assault in that corner of Korea. The Korean Expedition of 1871 sought to open trade with the insular Asian nation and avenge the destruction of an American ship crewed by kidnappers and pirates. Fifteen American sailors and marines won the Medal of Honor in the brief war, the first such medals awarded for service overseas. Though their actions were skillfully executed, the lamentable political context of the conflict may explain why their deeds are not exactly celebrated in the history textbooks. ....
