TSU partners with AME Church to offer a coding course in Africa

Tennessee State University announced on Wednesday a partnership with the African Methodist Episcopal Church to provide digital opportunities for students in West and South Africa.
With this partnership, eligible high school students will not only earn both high school and college credit but gain technology skills with access to digital resources. 
In an interview, Vice President of the Smart Technology Innovation Center at TSU, Robbie Melton, said this program s purpose to spark an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics studies.
This is really to whet their appetite for the need for STEM degrees, Melton said.
The course will focus on non-traditional ways to train students such as coding, app design and robotics. ....

Overview
Mountain Empire Unified School District is a small, rural district close to San Diego and the Mexican border. The district’s English learners, who comprised 28 percent of the student body in 2018–2019, are nearly all Spanish speakers.
Mountain Empire replaced its prior English language development (ELD) courses with Cuyamaca College’s course sequence and curriculum, allowing students to earn both high school and college credit at the same time. This rigorous dual enrollment model for English learners is delivered by high school teachers who became certified as adjunct college faculty and collaborated deeply with Cuyamaca’s English as a second language (ESL) team. EAST ELLIJAY, Ga. – In March 2021, the latest revisions to Board Policy IDE(3) were made for Competitive Interscholastic Activities. This month, Band Director David Wiebers submitted a request to allow a waiver to the policy for the band.
That waiver would allow a small number of students in the 8th grade to march with the high school band. Wiebers told the board that the waiver would help the band as it has had middle schoolers march before. With stated benefits to the students, retention rate, the high school band, and the middle school band, the request would allow the continuation of the practice in spite of the policy. ....

The book looks at mill towns in Bartow, Chattooga, Cherokee, Cobb, Douglas, Floyd, Gordon, Hall, Polk, Walker and Whitfield counties as well as the rise and fall of what she calls the “Mill Village Era.” This is the third book on north Georgia history Russell has written and says this one is her favorite.
