Henderson Salvation Army leader among Biscuitville Black History Month honorees


HENDERSON — Capt. Derrick Smith, commanding officer of the Salvation Army of Henderson, is being honored by Biscuitville for Black History Month celebration.
Biscuitville Fresh Southern is celebrating Black History Month by honoring Kizzmekia Corbett, Jamilla Pinder, and Derrick Smith. Smith said he’s “truly honored.” “Just because [of] what black history means,” Smith added. “There are people that have laid down their lives … just to better our country for all people. And so, just to be a part of some of those names, I’m honored.”
His honor comes with a fun opportunity.
During February, Biscuitville is giving away commemorative bookmarks featuring Derrick Smith to customers while supplies last, according to the release. The bookmarks contain a coupon for a free sausage biscuit from Biscuitville for customers’ next visit. Along with Derrick Smith, Corbett and Pinder shall be featured online via other digital media, ....

Local organizations take part in donations during the winter


HENDERSON — With the COVID-19 pandemic getting worse around North Carolina in regard to loss of life and financial ramifications, many local organizations have put extra emphasis on ensuring that residents are cared for during the winter months.
Among the churches taking part in donations is the Risen Faith Outreach Ministry, which plans to hand out 125 boxes of food this weekend after previously holding a similar event shortly before Thanksgiving.
“This is the first time we’ve done something like this for Christmas,” Pastor John Miles said. “Our goal is to give these boxes of food out to seniors and other people who need it. So many people around the world are going hungry right now because of COVID-19, and we want to do what we can to supply our community with food.” ....
