Black fungus epidemic building up, 500 cases in Gujarat alone

1449 New Delhi, May 20 Hit by an alarming surge in cases of black fungus (mucormycosis) during and after Covid-19 treatment, the government today asked states to notify the lethal disease, mandating every public and private health facility to report all suspected and confirmed cases. Doctors across India have begun calling mucormycosis an “epidemic within a pandemic” with the disease causing maiming, loss of vision and brain infection. Haryana and Rajasthan were the first to make the disease notifiable. Delhi’s Ganga Ram Hospital alone has 51 patients of black fungus, 75 per cent of them are diabetic. The disease is mostly being seen among diabetic Covid patients on steroid therapy.

The Centre has granted new drug approvals to five more drug companies for producing the injectable Amphotericin B in India, adding to the six companies that are already producing it. In fact, Union Minister of State for Chemicals Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted, “Black Fungus (Mucormycosis) curing drug #Amphotericin B’s shortage will be resolved soon!” Further, he added, “Indian companies have also placed orders for importing 6 lakh vials of Amphotericin B.”

The day also saw many fertiliser plants committing to supply an additional 50 tonnes of liquid oxygen daily to hospitals and FICCI tying up with a group of German small/ medium industries to arrange 1,500 concentrators for private hospitals. The decision to purchase 1 lakh oxygen concentrators was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These contraptions will be procured at the earliest using PM-CARES fund and given to high-burden States, an official statement said.
