Appointment of Commissioners of Criminal Cases Review Commission
Zahra Ahmed, Nicola Cockburn and Joanne Fazakerley have been appointed as Commissioners of the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) for 3 years from 1 June 2021.
The CCRC is an independent body, set up by the Criminal Appeal Act 1995, to investigate possible miscarriages of justice in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The CCRC decides if there is any new evidence or new argument which raises a real possibility that an appeal court would quash a conviction or reduce a sentence.
Appointments to the CCRC are regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments and comply with the Governance Code on Public Appointments. ....

Her Majesty The Queen, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, has approved the appointment of Zahra Ahmed, Nicola Cockburn and Joanne Fazakerley as Commissioners of the CCRC.

Zahra Ahmed, Nicola Cockburn and Joanne Fazakerley have been appointed as Commissioners of the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) for 3 years from 1 June 2021.

Undercover policing: Officer defends spying on anti-apartheid movement

An undercover officer who spied on the anti-apartheid movement has told an inquiry his work was justified because it could have caused more disorder than the far right.
The retired officer said its actions, in the 1970s, included demonstrations against cricket and rugby tours.
The movement caused problems and dangers and was a nuisance , he said.
The elderly officer is the first to give evidence at the Undercover Policing Inquiry.
The inquiry is looking into the targeting of the peer and former Labour cabinet minister Lord Peter Hain. ....

The legacy of murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence is one of hope and that change is possible, his parents have said.
Neville and Doreen Lawrence made the comment 28 years to the day since their son was murdered in an unprovoked attack by a gang of racists in Eltham, south-east London, and as a public inquiry into shadowy undercover policing tactics held a minute’s silence in his memory.
They said: “Despite the brutal circumstances of Stephen’s death, those left behind have campaigned to ensure that his legacy is ultimately one of hope, reminding us that change is both much needed but also possible.” ....
