Investigation launched after death at Disability Support Services home


It was undertaking a review of the incident and remained in close contact with the person’s family.
Disability Support Services provides residential support for around 200 people across Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough, in more than 50 suburban homes.
The homes range from one-bedroom flats to six bedroom homes and are either owned by Nelson Marlborough Health, Housing NZ or private landlords.
Nelson Bays Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston​ said police were still investigating the incident, where the resident of a care home had been run over in a driveway.
A WorkSafe spokeswoman confirmed it was also investigating the incident.
Kinsey said the health board was not able to comment further given those inquiries, however it was working closely with them to support their processes. ....

Interim assistant DSS director dies at 52

Those who knew Kramer said she was committed to ensuring the best for students and always brought a spirit of generosity to her work and those around her.
Leila Kramer, the interim assistant director of Disability Support Services, died unexpectedly earlier this month. She was 52.
Kramer joined the DSS staff in 2016, helping students with their studies, organization skills and time management. A certified life coach, Kramer spent time developing workshops for students to succeed both within and beyond the DSS office.
Those who knew Kramer said she was committed to ensuring the best for students and always brought a spirit of generosity to her work and those around her. ....

CARBONDALE — Southern Illinois University Carbondale was included among the Top 20 Wheelchair Friendly Colleges recently by New Mobility Magazine and the United Spinal Association.
“Their ranking method is more rigorous than that of many other lists of this type, so this is a real feather in our cap,” Lisa Caringer, director of Disability Support Services, said. “SIU has long enjoyed a reputation for excellence in access for wheelchair users. We were an early leader in removing physical barriers and assisting disabled college students, who have been traditionally marginalized.”
In the report, Jean Dobbs, project director for Top 20 Wheelchair Friendly Colleges, praised SIU’s culture. ....

CARBONDALE, Ill. Inclusivity has been intrinsic to Southern Illinois University Carbondale since its earliest days, and that dedication to ensuring all Salukis feel welcome and appreciated has earned the university national recognition once again. The university was included among the Top 20 Wheelchair Friendly Colleges recently by New Mobility Magazine and the United Spinal Association.

Family of Beloved CSM Employee Kevin Phillips Establishes Scholarship in his Memory for Students with Disabilities | Southern Maryland News Net

A memorial scholarship honoring beloved CSM employee Kevin Phillips has been established by his wife Regina Phillips to financially assist College of Southern Maryland (CSM) students with disabilities. Phillips was a Maintenance Mechanic at CSM at the time of his death, August 10.
“Kevin worked hard to make sure that facilities at the college were maintained to ADA standards and he always provided unstinting encouragement to students with learning differences and/or disabilities,” said his wife Regina Phillips. “Kevin genuinely believed that there was every reason to believe that these students could succeed at CSM.”
Phillips went on to share Kevin had a special interest in the restoration of historic houses and buildings and through the years he developed a great deal of expertise and specialized skills to help restore properties to look as they did when they were first built. ....
