Expert Commentary: Potential and Benefits of Blue Ammonia as a Clean Fuel of the Future
According to the latest edition of the GECF Global Gas Outlook 2050 [1], the demand for natural gas is expected to increase by 50% from 3,950 billion cubic metres (bcm) in 2019 to 5,920 bcm by 2050. Therefore, natural gas would be an integral part of the world energy supply for the following years. Meanwhile, gas producers perceive natural gas as a vector of the energy transition, notably hydrogen, and thus in order to achieve long-term emission reduction targets, they have begun to consider ....

Marine Mammals vs. Gas and Oil: Presidential Authority Under OCSLA

Carol J. Miller

The quest to fulfill energy demands places whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals at substantial risk. When seismic surveys are used to explore for oil and gas, shock waves and rapid changes in pressure can cause tissue destruction and deafen marine mammals, who are highly dependent on their key senses for survival.
In the interest of conservation and prudent development of the natural resources, President Truman’s 1945 Proclamation asserted federal jurisdiction over natural resources, the subsoil, and the seabed of offshore resources of the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) of the United States. Proclamation 2667, 10 Fed. Reg. 12,305 (Sept. 28, 1945). The goal of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSLA), passed in 1953, is to balance protection for marine animals and restoration of coastal beaches and wetlands, with management of oil and gas exploration. 43 U.S.C. §§ 1331–1356(b) (1953). The 1978 OCSLA amendments addressed incre ....

Pipe dreams and net-zero agendas
THE Egyptian Petroleum Minister, Tareq El Molla, in a first visit to Israel on February 21 agreed with his Israeli counterpart, Yuval Steinitz, to work together toward an inter-governmental agreement for the construction of an offshore gas pipeline from the Leviathan gas-field to Egypt’s liquefaction facilities. This came as part of a discussion on ways to boost joint cooperation on energy security in both countries.
This visit was preceded by similar delegations of Greek and Cypriot leaders, intended to demonstrate renewed regional ally unity in the light of the forthcoming meetings involving Greece, Turkey, Cyprus and the EU, and US’ evolving role in the region. ....

The US will take a long time to return to pre-pandemic demand, but supplies will be cleaner when they come, according to the EIA’s Reference case. [NGW Magazine Volume 6, Issue 4]
by: Charles Ellinas
The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) published its Annual Energy Outlook 2021 (AEO 2021) February 3 exploring long-term energy trends in the US.
Its clear message is that the US will take some time to return to pre-Covid-19 levels of energy demand. The good news is that carbon emission growth will be contained.
AEO 2021 considers a Reference, baseline, case representing EIA’s best assessment of how US and world energy markets will operate through 2050. It is based on current economic and demographic forecasts and assumes improvement in known energy production, delivery, and consumption technologies. It also assumes that existing laws and regulations ....
