A win for quarry opponents • The Yellow Springs News

It’s been nearly four years since neighbors of a proposed limestone quarry north of Yellow Springs banded together to fight the mining effort.
They formed a group, Citizens Against Mining, or CAM, based in Mad River Township, to challenge the company, Enon Sand and Gravel, in a multi-pronged battle.
Along the way, there have been both setbacks and victories, but so far mining has yet to get underway on the 420-acre property.
And in December 2020, the citizens group celebrated another win a private lawsuit settled in favor of five neighbors of the mine who successfully argued that mining could damage their property values and private wells. ....

MANILA, Philippines The United States Civil Military Support Element – Philippines (CMSE PHL), in partnership with the Philippine National Police Maritime Group (PNP-MG) – on January 12 and 13, Zambales, conducted training for 25 first responders in Masinloc, Zambales.
First responders from the Masinloc Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Masinloc Municipal Environment and Natural Resource Office, staff from Candelaria District Hospital, Masinloc Emergency Medical Services, and other local volunteer organizations were taught basic medical knowledge and CPR, and were guided through tailored scenarios designed to train participants in providing urgent, on-the-spot care to save lives. The training also expanded the medical capabilities of participants to administer care for citizens injured during emergencies or natural disasters. ....

Dugway Proving Ground project takes home award

Army facilities used drones to monitor eagles ♦
A Dugway Proving Ground project utilizing unmanned aircraft systems to monitor golden eagle nests at the base has won national recognition.
The project was named the 2020 Resource Conservative and Resiliency Project of the Year by the Department of Defense’s Environmental Security Technology Certification Program, according to Becki Bryant, DPG public affairs officer.
The announcement was made on the week of Dec. 1 during the program’s annual symposium.
“Dugway Proving Ground is home to multiple breeding pairs of golden eagles, which are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Because of these regulations, military testing and training activities can be restricted if they risk disturbing active eagle nests. Therefore, it is vital for Dugway Proving Ground, and similar military testing and training ranges, to fully understand the location and status of eagle ....
