The Second Drone Age

The Second Drone Age
Recent conflicts in Syria and Nagorno-Karabakh show how armed drones are reshaping the battlefield of the future
KARACHI:
Soaring high above the clouds, a lone aircraft scans the ground for movement. With its mechanical eye, it spots a column of tanks and mobile artillery moving into position for an offensive. The pilotless plane relays everything it sees to a ground controller in real time. In a matter of moments, a swarm of smaller drones appears over the armoured column. Each of them seeks out an individual target before launching into a decimating kamikaze attack.
It has been nearly two decades since armed drones first captured our collective imagination. In that time, they have seen action in theatres ranging from Pakistan and Afghanistan, to Syria, Yemen and Africa. Still, many may yet think the aforementioned scenario is straight out of science fiction. ....

Though negotiators have been in Doha, Qatar, since early January for the second round of peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, top leaders from both sides have been notably absent.
Meanwhile, President Ashraf Ghani huddled with political leaders in Afghanistan during what appears to be a stalemate in the talks.
Ghani met with the chairman of the High Council of National Reconciliation, Abdullah Abdullah, former President Hamid Karzai and former jihadi leader, professor Abdul Rab Rasul Sayyaf, on Jan. 26, according to a statement from the president’s office. ....

Exposing the fake news war against Pakistan

9 January 2021
Author: Imtiaz Gul, CRSS Islamabad
For nearly 15 years, a network comprising over a thousand mostly Indian news outlets and domains operating across the world systematically influenced international opinion against Pakistan. On 9 December 2020, Brussels-based fake news watchdog EU DisinfoLab blew the lid off a systematic campaign stoking adverse views on Pakistan: a concerted program under the umbrella of the shadowy Delhi-based Srivastava Group. EU DisinfoLab dug up startling revelations of a ma ....

KARACHI:
Pakistan has put its troops along the border with India on ‘high alert’ after intelligence indicated that India could mount a misadventure or surgical strike to take the spotlight off the ongoing mammoth farmers’ protest in the country.
As the latest in a series of controversial policies backfire on Delhi, there is concern that Narendra Modi’s hardline Hindu nationalist government may go to any length to weaken the protests led by Sikh farmers and prevent them from giving impetus to the Khalistan movement. ....
