Emanuel Displaced Persons sound alarm on urban renewal vote

Portland City Hall will consider expanding indebtedness of Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Plan to $402 million.
A city plan to get more cash for urban renewal projects has drawn disapproval from residents who say they haven t received true restitution for the demolition of their homes and businesses.
The proposed changes to the Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Plan would allow officials to take out another $67 million loan for projects surrounding Interstate 5 the river of traffic and cement that has riven Portland s historically-Black neighborhoods since it was built in the 1960s.
But some community leaders are pushing back, saying a vote to approve the proposal shouldn t happen without further commitment for restitution for the owners of property that was razed. ....

Future of Portland Veterans Day Parade unclear
The future of the annual Portland Veterans Day Parade is in doubt.
The parade had been held on Veterans Day every year in the Hollywood District for 45 years, making it one of the longest-running patriotic tributes in the country. It was canceled this year for the first time because of COVID-19 concerns. And now the longtime organizer has announced that it will now longer play that role.
Effective immediately, Ross Hollywood Chapel and Dignity Memorial will be stepping down as organizers and primary backers of the parade. This decision was not made lightly. In the past several years, the parade has grown in size and scope to a point that it is no longer realistic to task our funeral home associates with its planning and organization, Oregon Market Director Angela McKenzie-Tucker emailed the members of the parade committee on Tuesday, Dec. 8. ....
