The population of slender-billed vultures in Assam has come down by almost 99%, mainly due to the use of diclofenac- a banned drug- and other pesticides.
GUWAHATI: At least 20 vultures belonging to critically endangered species died in eastern Assam s Tinsukia.
The incident was reported at Sadiya sub-division in upper Assam s Tinsukia district when the critically endangered vultures died from poisoning after consuming the carcasses of two cattle.
Meanwhile, the forest officials rushed to the spot and found 20 vultures dead while eight vultures were still alive and were sent for treatment at Tinsukia. ....

Poisoned Cattle Carcass Kills 23 Endangered Vultures in Assam
The population of slender-billed vultures in Assam has come down by almost 99%, mainly due to the use of diclofenac- a banned drug- and other pesticides.
Tinsukia: At least 23 vultures belonging to critically endangered species died in eastern Assam s Tinsukia.
The incident was reported at Dhola in Assam s Tinsukia district when the critically endangered vultures died from poisoning after consuming the carcasses of two cattle.
Meanwhile, forest officials have rescued 12 vultures in a critical condition and currently under treatment.
The dead vultures were sent for post mortem later.
Earlier in march 2019, 37 vultures belonging to three endangered species died in Assam s Sivasagar district after feeding on pesticide-laced cattle carcass. ....

The Ramadevarabetta Vulture Sanctuary near Ramanagara, 45 kilometres from Bengaluru, is awaiting the arrival of a new chick. A pair of long-billed vultures has gone into nesting and vulture enthusiasts are excited. “We are looking forward to having a new member here in the sanctuary,” says Shashikumar B, one of the founders of the Karnataka Vulture Conservation Trust.
Ramadevarabetta, India’s only vulture sanctuary, currently has five long-billed vultures, commonly known as the Indian vulture. These vultures nest between November and March and usually lay a single egg a year, which is incubated for over 50 days. Listed as ‘critically endangered’ in the IUCN Red List, a new member of the species is always ....

Foresters believe that the vulture got separated from its flock after flying 1,200-1,500 km from Himalayan region
Palanpur: In a juvenile Himalayan Griffon vulture was rescued from the Little Rann of Kutch (LRK) near Santalpur in Patan district recently.
Deputy conservator of forest (DCF) Patan J J Rajput said that the Griffon vultures which are a native of the Himalayan region are seen in Gujarat during their migration in winter.
“The bird was spotted in the desert area in Garamadi village in the Little Rann of Kutch by an environmentalist and bird lover Kanhayalal Rajgor a resident of Santalpur,” Rajput told TOI. ....

Abundant and healthy animal carcasses and a suitable habitat with an undisturbed area to lay eggs is all that the vultures in South Asia ask for to thrive.
Of the nine South Asian species of this large ungainly bird, eight are found in Pakistan. These include the Oriental White-backed vulture, the Long-billed vulture, the Red-headed vulture, the Egyptian vulture, the Cinereous vulture, the Lammergeier, the Himalayan Griffon vulture and the Eurasian griffon vulture.
However, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has placed three of these species on the ‘critically endangered’ list of threatened species. Of these three, the White-backed and the Long-billed vultures are both found in Tharparkar, Sindh. ....
