Dismiss Normal text size Advertisement It took 17 days for the Education Department to be notified and to send out a clean-up crew after contractors disturbed asbestos while installing airconditioning at a Brisbane school. Education officials faced a grilling about asbestos removal at Sunnybank State High School during budget estimates. Credit:Rohan Thomson On November 9, at 6.35am, airconditioning contractors disturbed asbestos at Sunnybank State High School but a professional crew was not sent to the school for testing, and to clean up more than 30 rooms, until November 26, 17 days later.

Early Ipswich Cup tips: Excellent track but rug up

Premium Content Subscriber only PREPARING for his 17th Ipswich Cup on Saturday, track manager Sean Tou would love another sprinkle of rain later in the week. While he s happy with the current soft 5 rating, Tou likes a little bit more give in the track . The track is in a really good position at the moment, he said gearing up for another massive week of Cup preparations. We haven t raced on the fence for quite a while so the inside pad that they are running on for the Ipswich Cup is set up perfectly. I can t complain too much. Hopefully we get a little bit of rain on Thursday just to freshen up. I wouldn t mind at least another 5 mil (millimetres).

Top Ipswich stories you may have missed this week

Hospital funding desperately needed There was one major development and another two important updates regarding hospitals in the West Moreton region this week. Arguably the most important of these was the announcement of a new 174-bed public hospital section to be added onto the existing Mater Private Hospital at Springfield. The new public hospital will include an emergency department, intensive care unit and maternity services, with the state government to contribute $177 million to construction. Inspections of the extensions at Ipswich Hospital. Picture: West Moreton Health With about 100,000 new residents expected to call Springfield and Ripley Valley home over the next five years, and Ipswich Hospital already operating flat out, there is no doubt these facilities will be desperately needed.
