Man charged with threatening Reynolds cites free speech | News, Sports, Jobs

IOWA CITY An Iowa man charged with leaving a threatening voicemail telling Gov. Kim Reynolds she should be “hung for treason” defended his comments Thursday as free speech, saying he was expressing opposition to COVID-19 restrictions.
Harvey Hunter Jr., 48, is charged with first-degree harassment for the profane Jan. 5 message he left on a governor’s office phone line set up to gather input over whether Reynolds should continue the partial statewide mask mandate.
Hunter called the GOP governor a dictator and said “every single one of you need to be hung for treason for pushing this COVID scam,” according to a criminal complaint filed in Polk County. Growing more intense, Hunter called Reynolds two derogatory names for women and said “you need to be put in front of a firing squad,” the complaint said. ....

The Marshalltown City Council took several actions relating to the purchase of real estate and preparing land for future development during a regular council meeting Monday.
The real estate purchases relate to the city’s goals of demolishing buildings which were heavily damaged and uninhabitable after the tornado. FEMA requires a city to own property before being able to obligate funds toward its demolition. ....

DAVENPORT An Iowa man was convicted Tuesday of fatally beating a pastor outside of his church.
Joshua Pendleton, 37, was convicted of first-degree murder and robbery in the October 2019 killing of the Rev. Allen Henderson in Fort Dodge, a city of about 25,000 roughly 70 miles (112 kilometers) north of Des Moines. He is scheduled to be sentenced June 18 and faces a mandatory term of life in prison without the possibility of parole. ....

Students, parents and guardians in the Marshalltown Community School District and in districts across Iowa will take the Conditions for Learning Survey administered by the Iowa Department of Education.
Parents, guardians and students were recently sent a survey link with questions relating to a range of issues.
Student safety, positive student relationships, school rules and how they are enforced are among the included topics addressed by questions in the survey.
The Conditions for Learning Survey is required by the Iowa Department of Education to be administered by Iowa public schools annually since the signing of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act in 2015, which replaced the No Child Left Behind Act. The survey was designed to help improve student engagement, safety and learning environments in Iowa schools. ....

Census: Iowa population grows 4.7%, keeps 4 US House seats | News, Sports, Jobs

DES MOINES Iowa continued to see slow population growth in 2020 U.S. Census Bureau data released Monday with the state resident population growing 4.7 percent in the last decade to 3,190,369 people.
While the state retained its four congressional districts, the muted population trend could mean the loss of one of those U.S. House seats in the future. Iowa’s percentage growth was significantly less than the national increase of 7.4 percent.
Between 2000 and 2010, Iowa’s population grew 4.1 percent.
Iowa was among 38 states that didn’t gain or lose U.S. House representation.
Six states gained seats with Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Carolina and Oregon gaining one while Texas gained two. California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia each lost a seat. ....
