Intel Uses Machine Learning To Make GTA’s Graphics Look Scarily Photorealistic
By Tyler Lee, on 05/13/2021 04:28 PDT
GTA 5’s graphics are decent and it looks good considering how old the game is, but we would never ever call it realistic-looking, but that might not be a bad thing. That being said, if you’ve ever wondered what a game like GTA could look like had it been developed with photorealistic graphics in mind, then you’re in luck.

This is because thanks to researchers at Intel Labs, they have decided to try and apply machine learning techniques to rendered footage from a console game, like GTA, and make it photorealistic. The end results can be seen in the video above, and we can tell you that it looks pretty damn real. ....

One of the more impressive aspects of
Grand Theft Auto V is how closely the game’s San Andreas approximates real-life Los Angeles and Southern California, but a new machine learning project from Intel Labs called “Enhancing Photorealism Enhancement” might push it toward photorealism (via
).
Putting the game through the processes researchers Stephan R. Richter, Hassan Abu Alhaija, and Vladlen Kolten created produces a surprising result: a visual look that has unmistakable similarities to the kinds of photos you might casually take through the smudged front window of your car. You have to see it in motion to really appreciate it, but the combination of slightly washed-out lighting, smoother pavement, and believably reflective cars just sells the fact you’re looking out at the real street from a real dashboard, even if it ....

GTA 5 graphics are now being boosted by advanced AI at Intel

Intel Labs, a research hub for the tech company of the same name, has created a new process for enhancing images and it showed it off using
Grand Theft Auto 5. The process converts the standard footage from the game into nearly photorealistic images using a very complicated procedure that involves an AI, according to a former member of the team.
Most of the Intel Labs team’s data and findings while building this new image enhancement technique is available through their project page on Intel’s website and a very detailed white paper. However, to make things a little easier to grasp, the team also created a video that shows off the process in motion and some of the enhanced footage from the game. ....
