Camera at the Mart: northern demand drives the trade in Ballybay

This June 2020-born Limousin bull calf weighed 415kg and was sold at €1,050 (€2.53/kg).
The great Monaghan man Oliver Brady once said that “Ballybay was for drinking tae”. However, if he was around today, he could say “Ballybay’s for buying cattle”.
Ballybay Mart has seen a transformation under new manager Leitrim native Adrian Grimes in recent months, with between 1,000 and 1,500 cattle moving through the sales ring on a weekly basis.
This June 2019-born Charolais heifer weighed 495kg and sold for €1,200 (€2.42/kg).
This is on top of over 500 cattle weekly moving north through their licenced export premises and close to 1,000 head of sheep also being sold through the mart. ....

Initially set for 2020, the Aggieville Showdown was rescheduled because of the pandemic, with a new date of April 17, 2021, where exhibitors from the nation over vied for $5,000 in real money prizes and the
opportunity to show their cattle at a Grand Drive event in the Aggieville Business District.
Including a western design show, performer Lucas Maddy, and live meetings with the triumphant candidates, The Aggieville Showdown joined exhibitors, students, businesses, and all public to celebrate agriculture in the ‘Ville.

Founder and General Manager Christian Calliham said inspiration for this event got started after fellow classmates and himself spent a summer doing internships and brainstormed an idea of doing a grand drive in the center of Aggieville. ....
