Eastern Monarch Butterfly Population Falls Again
Endangered Species Act Protection Urgent for Iconic Pollinator
WASHINGTON The yearly count of monarch butterflies overwintering in Mexico, released today, continues to show a dramatic decline in this imperiled species. Today’s count of 2.10 hectares (5.2 acres) of occupied winter habitat is down 26% from last year’s count. The minimum population threshold needed to be out of the danger zone of extinction is six hectares.
Overall eastern monarchs have declined by more than 80% over the past two decades.

Monarch Butterflies Put on Candidate Waiting List for Endangered Species Act Protection
WASHINGTON, D.C. Following yesterday s news that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has now deemed that protection for Monarch butterflies under the Endangered Species Act is scientifically and legally warranted but currently precluded by other species listings (
scroll down for press release), the Service later in the day released additional details concerning its decision, including that it intends to propose listing under the Endangered Species Act for Monarchs in Fiscal Year 2024, if listing is still warranted at that time.

Monarch Butterflies Put on Waiting List for Endangered Species Act Protection
WASHINGTON The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today that protection for monarch butterflies under the Endangered Species Act is warranted but precluded. This puts the imperiled butterfly on a waiting list for listing but confers no protection in the meantime.
The decision was issued in response to a 2014 petition from the Center for Food Safety, Center for Biological Diversity and allies seeking a threatened listing for the iconic pollinators due to drastic population declines and ongoing threats. Today’s finding means the butterfly’s status will be reviewed annually until the Service issues either a listing proposal or denial. ....
