Drones reveal higher entanglement rates for blue, fin whales in Gulf of St. Lawrence

Fin, blue whales getting tangled in fishing gear in Gulf of St. Lawrence more often than thought: study
Between 41 and 57 per cent of fin whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence are getting entangled in fishing gear, a problem previously identified mainly in right whales and humpbacks, according to new research that relied on drones. Scientists say the rates are higher than past estimates and likely comparable for blue whales as well.

Sawfish look something like hedge trimmers with fins and can reach lengths of 17 feet. To Jasmin Graham, president and chief executive of Minorities in Shark Sciences, it’s sometimes hard to believe such weird fish exist.
“They look so intimidating if you look at them from the top down,” she said. But from the bottom, “they have these cute, adorable little gray mouths that kind of look like they’re smiling.” ....

The risk that whales can get entangled in fishing nets appears to have been underestimated, according to a new study.
As many as 60% of blue whales in Canada s Gulf of St Lawrence have come into contact with fishing ropes and nets, based on scarring seen on photographs snapped by drones.
Entanglement rates were similar in another ocean giant, the fin whale.
Whales can suffocate or starve after getting tied up in fishing gear.
An estimated 300,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises a year die after being injured in nets or lines designed to target other species. ....
