Why can't Britain handle the truth about Winston Churchill? | Winston Churchill

It’s ironic. We’re told by government and media that “cancel culture” is an imposition of the academic left. Yet here it is in reality, the actual “cancel culture” that prevents a truthful engagement with British history. Churchill was an admired wartime leader who recognised the threat of Hitler in time and played a pivotal role in the allied victory. It should be possible to recognise this without glossing over his less benign side. The scholars at the Cambridge event – Madhusree Mukerjee, Onyeka Nubia and Kehinde Andrews – drew attention to Churchill’s dogged advocacy of British colonial rule; his contributing role in the disastrous 1943 Bengal famine, in which millions of people died unnecessarily; his interest in eugenics; and his views, deeply retrograde even for his time, on race. ....

Academic blasts bid to remove William Gladstone's name from Liverpool Uni halls over slavery link

A politics lecturer has hit out at Liverpool University s plans to drop the name of former Prime Minister William Gladstone from a building because of his family s links to the slave trade.
The university emailed staff on Tuesday confirming that the plans to rename the Gladstone Hall student accommodation building, which were initially announced in June, are set to go ahead.
They said the decision was being made because of the strength of feeling evoked in our student community by the Gladstone family s historic ownership of enslaved people, and their profiting from the transatlantic trade in enslaved people .
But the move was slammed by university employee Dr David Jeffery, an expert on the history of Liverpool, who said on Twitter that Gladstone was one of Britain s greatest Prime Ministers. ....

Why race warriors who hate Churchill must be challenged says ANDREW ROBERTS | Express Comment | Comment

Professor Kehinde Andrews of Birmingham City University sneered that Churchill had not fought personally in the Second World War. I mean, was it Churchill out there fighting the war? he said.
Cause I m pretty sure it wasn t; I m pretty sure he was at home. Ignoring the fact that Churchill was 65 when the war broke out, and thus way past the age of conscription, in fact Churchill showed great personal bravery, going up on to the Air Ministry roof during the Blitz, and travelling 110,000 miles outside the UK, often within the radius of Luftwaffe fighters.
I m pretty sure that if Churchill wasn t there, Prof Andrews went on, the war would have still ended in the same way, right? Wrong. As Clement Attlee, Churchill s deputy prime minister said, Without Churchill, Britain might have been defeated. ....

Churchill's Grandson Joins Historian to Slam Anti-Churchill Academics

1 Mar 2021
Sir Winston Churchill’s grandson, Sir Nicholas Soames, has joined a prominent historian for a comprehensive fisking of the case against the wartime leader advanced by left-wing academics at a Churchill College seminar.
Priyamvada Gopal, Onyeka Nubia, Kehinde Andrews, and Madhusree Mukerjee had slated the British icon at the college bearing his name in a seminar titled
The Racial Consequences of Mr Churchill, in which he was described as “the perfect embodiment of white supremacy” and the empire he led to victory over Hitler’s Germany branded “far worse than the Nazis.”
These and other charges have now been rebutted in a Policy Exchange paper written by historian Andrew Roberts, author of ....
