Fayette schools chip in for Coweta neighbors in need

When a tornado ripped through Coweta County in late March, the storm left a trail of devastation in its wake. The road to recovery will be a long one, and schools around Fayette County are stepping up in a variety of ways to help their neighbors in need.
It hit especially close to home for a couple of Fayette schools. Rising Starr Middle band director Brandon Respress and his wife Katherine, a math teacher at Sandy Creek, and their two children survived the storm, but their home was destroyed. The Rising Starr band family set up a GoFundMe to help the family, raising nearly $17,000 so far. ....

A class at Inman Elementary is handy with a set of tools. Tania Davis’s 2nd grade class took part in a Home Depot Virtual Workshop, learning how to build tool benches and vanities with the help of contractor and TV host Kayleen McCabe.
“Our goal was for students to realize that they could have careers in different areas, including trade careers, that give them the opportunity to use their hands to explore and create,” said Davis. “Using your hands, in this technology-driven world, is still very viable and necessary in our ever-evolving, global world.” ....

A shortage of substitute teachers during a time when the demand has never been higher has left Fayette County Public Schools trying to find ways to fill daily absences caused by Covid-19.
There has always been a need for substitutes during normal years, but the need is greater this year due to the pandemic. Teachers out sick, on quarantine, or needing to take care of an ill family member has caused a greater number of absences.
For the same reasons, many substitutes who have worked in previous years are not available to fill in, or do not feel comfortable being in a classroom right now. ....

Spartanburg school districts release COVID-19 case totals for semester


Spartanburg County s seven school districts are reporting approximately 1,100 new cases of COVID-19 since Oct. 12, according to information obtained by the Herald-Journal.
The 1,100 cases are more than triple the estimated 350 cases reported during October for the first nine weeks. 
The increase in cases is being reported at the same time as the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported on Tuesday that there were 210 new confirmed COVID -19 cases in Spartanburg County. Since the start of the pandemic, the county has had a total of 14,668 cases and 301 deaths.
To help school districts bring students back into the classroom full time and in a safe manner in January, the S.C. Department of Education announced Monday its plans to provide additional funding to all public school districts to support the reopening efforts. The SCDE promised an additional $84.3 million from the Coronavirus Relief Fund to be used to reimburse expenses incurred since J ....
