Singapore Reacts Angrily to Safe Haven Allegation

Jakarta. Singapore reacted strongly on Friday to allegations by an Indonesian anti-corruption official that the city-state has become a safe haven for graft fugitives fleeing its giant neighbor.
A senior official with the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said earlier that prosecuting graft suspects in foreign jurisdictions is a daunting task, especially when they already found a safe haven in Singapore.
“The only country who is not willing to sign an extradition treaty related to corruption cases is Singapore,” KPK’s deputy for enforcement Karyoto told local media in Jakarta on Tuesday. ....

The Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut: TNI-AL) has held a ceremony to mark the start of construction of a submarine ‘support station’ in the South China Sea.

A foundation stone for the facility was ceremonially laid down on 5 April by the service’s chief, Admiral Yudo Margono, on Pulau Natuna Besar, the biggest of the Natuna Islands cluster, which is located near the disputed maritime region. The facility is located along the Lampa Strait and will come under the command of the TNI-AL’s Armada I once it is completed. ....

Indonesia appoints Christian as new National Police Chief

Indonesia has appointed a Christian as the new National Police Chief, the first time that a member of a religious minority has held the post in nearly 50 years.
Commissioner General Listyo Sigit Prabowo was sworn in on 27 January, having been unanimously approved by the legal and political affairs commission of the Indonesian House of Representatives.
Listyo Sigit Prabowo, the new Chief of the Indonesian National Police, was previously Head of the Criminal Investigation Agency
Listyo told the commission that he wanted to take a “more humane approach” to law enforcement.
Church leaders welcomed the news, praising the “moderate” policies of Indonesian President Joko Widodo. ....
