It was September 2019, and exiled Indonesian human rights lawyer Veronica Koman was enjoying her final days in Australia. Her studies at the Australian National University in Canberra were almost over and all that was left was to wait for graduation day.
One afternoon, Koman’s mobile phone rang. There was an SMS message from a friend in Indonesia.
Her colleague informed her that the police had declared Koman a suspect.
Since August 17, 2019, the Papua issue had been heating up. Racist actions by rogue security personnel against Papuan students in the East Java provincial capital of Surabaya had triggered a wave of public anger. ....

Report slams widespread abuses by Indonesian police

A human rights group in Indonesia has called for changes to provisions in the criminal code dealing with detaining suspects following more than 100 reported cases of police abuses including torture against prisoners in custody.
According to an Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) report, there were 103 reported rights violation cases between 2018 and 2020. Abuses included physical and psychological torture and illegal detention, it said.    ....

Indonesia has named a Christian as the new national police chief, the third person from the religious minority to hold the post in the Muslim-majority nation.
Commissioner General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, a Protestant, was the only nominee and was approved by parliament on Jan. 20,
The new chief, who heads the National Police s Criminal Investigation Agency and is a close ally of Indonesian President Joko Widodo, will replace General Idham Azis, who recently retired. ....

Jakarta (ANTARA) - People s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Deputy Speaker Hidayat Nur Wahid has sought the “immediate” formation of an independent fact-finding team to probe the shooting of six Islam Defenders Front (FPI) members by police.
He has also asked that the team be led by the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM).
The members of the fact-finding team must be drawn from the Komnas HAM, community-based organizations, political parties, non-governmental organizations, and the House of Representatives (DPR), he was quoted by ANTARA as saying here on Friday. ....
