EISENHOWER SCHOOL BUILDING TO CLOSE FOR REST OF SCHOOL YEAR By Hometown2

As a result of a fire that destroyed two modular classrooms and caused significant smoke and water damage to the main building, the Eisenhower Elementary School building will remain closed for the rest of the school year.
The closure was needed due to the extent of the damage done and the process needed to bring the facility back to working order. The fire early Friday morning started around 1:50 in the morning, and brought several fire departments from Indiana and Westmoreland County to assist at the scene. The school district was thankful that the fire happened at a time when there were no students on campus, and that the only losses are material and can be replaced.

A giving heart, an industrious soul, a loving and wonderful wife and mother, Joan died peacefully at St. Andrews Village early on March 6, 2021. Despite pandemic restrictions, her daughter Melissa had seen her less than 24 hours before her passing and had let her know how much her family loved and adored her and wanted her spirit to be peacefully released.
The daughter of Duane Stigers and Jean Dickey, Joan was born in Punxsutawney, Pa. on March 28, 1932. Raised in Indiana, she attended Horace Mann School and graduated from Indiana High School. When the Indiana Junior High school underwent renovations in the early 2000’s, she was the driving force behind saving the bas-relief of a WWI doughboy on its north side.

Gerald “Gerry” E. Ready, 90, of Indiana, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.
A son of Thomas and Nellie Eckenroth Ready, he was born May 18, 1930, in Reading.
Mr. Ready received an undergraduate degree from Albright College in Reading and a master’s degree from Millersville University in Millersville. Gerry was a veteran of the United States Army. During that time, he studied Polish for one year at the Army Language School in California so he could work in Military Intelligence in Germany. Following his discharge from the Army, he worked for the Unemployment Office in Reading and for Aetna Insurance in the Casualty Department. He then started teaching German through FLES (Foreign Language Elementary School) in Reading, later moving to Indiana and teaching German at the Indiana Junior High, Indiana Senior High and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
