Watumulls: The Indian family that built an empire in Hawaii and popularised aloha wear

A clipping from St Louis Post Dispatch, October 19, 1947.
In 1865, German botanist William Hillebrand travelled to India with the intention of finding “East Indian” labour for the sugar plantations of Hawaii, where he lived and worked. Instead, he returned with plants and birds of breath-taking variety: crows, finches, the Chinese quail, Mongolian pheasants, the Indian sparrow and common mynah. By 1879, the mynah was a familiar species in Honolulu and soon in the other south-eastern islands of Hawaii.
For the first South Asians who set foot on the Hawaiian Islands around the early 1880s, the birds must have been a comforting sight. They had sailed over 11,000 km from Calcutta to Honolulu, a stopover that was still thousands of kilometres from their destination of mainland US and Canada, where the west coast offered attractive work opportunities. If nothing else, the soundscape in Hawaii must have been ....

“Mom, Kelly and I are dating.”
It was the second time in my life I told my mom I was dating a woman. The Oklahoma summer sun crept higher in the sky as we sat in the backyard of my childhood home. After a long, piercing moment of silence, I asked,
“Is there anything you want to say?”
She nodded in the same way she moved her head in agreement with a pastor’s Sunday sermon. ....

It was still February of last year, months before soapboxing by the two candidates reached a fever pitch. Donald Trump, recognising the importance of Indian American voters to his re-election chances, launched a five-figure digital ad buy targeting them. Not to be left behind, his Democratic rival Joe Biden too poured in the greenbacks. The ad blitz by the two competing campaigns was testament to the clout of the community that is among the wealthiest and most educated of all immigrant groups in the US. ....

Indian Americans are still broadly supportive of Modi, but are divided about India's future

Daniel Kramer/Reuters
Indian Americans, while broadly still supportive of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have mixed opinions about India’s trajectory as a democracy, according to a new report released on Tuesday.
The Indian American Attitudes Survey, conducted in September 2020, recorded the responses of 1,200 Indian Americans to a series of questions on how connected they are to India and how they view Indian political developments. A significant 39% of the respondents believe India is currently on the wrong track, while 36% believe it is on the right track.
With a population of over 4 million, Indian Americans are now the second largest immigrant group in America, and wooing them has been an important element of the Modi government’s foreign policy. Support for him, the survey shows, is highest among Hindus and Republicans in the diaspora. ....
