SNAs are subject to extra land-use restrictions, but tangata whenua, farmers, and other landowners argued the proposal undermined their sovereignty and property rights. The process was paused by Far North Mayor John Carter last month, right before hundreds joined a hīkoi to the council buildings, and delivered a petition. ....

(file) TWO of the three King Country district councils are staying well clear of the Significant Natural Areas (SNAs) furore heating up in Northland and the South Island. Complaints have come from Northland Māori where the scheme was described as a Government-led land grab by Ngāti Hau iwi representatives. The SNA mapping placed 42 per cent of Far North District Council land under SNAs. On the West Coast, an 87-year-old landowner said 70 per cent of his 607ha block of gorse and regenerating bush was declared an SNA. Ōtorohanga and Ruapehu district councils said there was no legal requirement for councils to undertake the mapping process that was upsetting landowners up and down the country. ....

Supplied John Nilsson says it is heartbreaking seeing his sheep and lambs attacked, with those still alive by morning often having to be put down due to their injuries. The Nilssons were buoyed on Wednesday night by five local hunters, who volunteered to come onto the farm and help protect the stock from further attack. The volunteers were able to shoot dead two of the dogs early on in the night, and no stock were attacked, he said. When the volunteers had to leave, the Nilssons took over the patrol and had a group of dogs turn up at about 4am. ....

Despite regular night patrols, farmworkers have only managed to shoot two dogs, which are killing for sport, he believed. “It’s like a war on our hands,” he said. “These dogs are hunting more like dingoes. They are very quiet about it, they attack individual animals – basically just killing them, not eating them – so we can lose 20 in a night.” ....
