The coronavirus has catapulted Malaysia to be one of the world’s dozen countries that are the worst performers in the pandemic, whether because of daily new cases or daily Covid-19 deaths.
If by midnight on Saturday – some sixty hours from now – there is no royal assent to the revocation of the six emergency ordinances as announced in Parliament on Monday by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Parliament), Takiyuddin Hassan, Malaysia will be plunged into a major constitutional crisis. ....

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is coming under increasing pressure to allow parliament to return this month, as his decision to impose a state of emergency and suspend democracy in January has done little to prevent one of the world’s worst outbreaks of COVID-19.
The embattled leader will decide this week at a Cabinet meeting when parliament will reconvene, following King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah’s repeated calls to have the federal legislature in session before the state of emergency expires on August 1. ....

LUMPUR: The High Court here today ruled that Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan has no locus standi to file a legal action to compel Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Idrus Harun to advise Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to resign from the Prime Minister’s post for allegedly not having the majority support of Parliament.
Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid said this was clearly outlined in Order 53 rule 2(4) of the Rules of Court (ROC) 2012, that to have a locus standi in a judicial review application, the applicant (Khairuddin) must be adversely affected by the decision, action or omission of any public authority in relation to the exercise of its public duty or function. ....
