Intense homeless outreach launched in downtown San Diego

SAN DIEGO
Social workers and mental health professionals teamed up and hit the streets of downtown San Diego on Monday morning in the biggest outreach ever in San Diego as the city attempts to reduce the growing number of encampments on sidewalks.
“This is unprecedented,” Mayor Todd Gloria told teams that had assembled in a downtown parking lot on Broadway. “This is a focused effort we have not seen before.”
Gloria and City Council members Stephen Whitburn and Sean Elo-Rivera thanked the teams and gave them a pep talk before they headed out on their first shift. For the next three or four weeks, teams will focus on East Village, the Gaslamp Quarter and the City Center area Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rapid-response teams will work until 10 p.m. to help people on the street in a crisis situation. ....

Man suffers severe cut to hand in downtown San Diego attack

DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO
Police used a tourniquet on the arm of a badly injured man Wednesday night in downtown San Diego after he reported that he was attacked with a knife, an officer said.
It happened just after 10 p.m. on Sixth Avenue near A Street, outside PATH San Diego’s Connections Housing, a homelessness services facility, according to Officer Darius Jamsetjee.
Police arrived quickly to find the 51-year-old victim “heavily bleeding” from a “severe laceration” or slash wound to his hand, Jamsetjee said. Officers applied the tourniquet and rendered aid until medics arrived.
Radio traffic indicated medics later took the man to a hospital. ....

Moving date set for homeless shelter at Convention Center

SAN DIEGO
More than 700 people at a temporary homeless shelter in the San Diego Convention Center will begin moving into smaller shelters the week of March 22, but the waterfront venue isn’t expected to host any events in the foreseeable future.
Instead, the Convention Center soon could become a vaccination site, San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairman Nathan Fletcher said Friday during a press conference outside the venue.
While the plan is just in the idea stage now, Fletcher said the spacious building on Harbor Drive near downtown’s waterfront could be a drive-through vaccination site or possibly the county’s next super site, which can administer up to 5,000 shots a day. ....
