Associate Justice Edgardo L. Delos Santos
Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Edgardo L. Delos Santos is set to retire on Wednesday, June 30, a year earlier than his mandatory retirement at age 70 on June 12, 2022.
The SC, as a full court, had approved Delos Santos’ early retirement “for reasons pertaining to his current state of health.” His “state of health” was not disclosed.
With the retirement of Delos Santos, who was appointed by President Duterte in Dec. 2019, there are now two vacancies in the 15-member SC.
The first vacancy was a result of the promotion of then Associate Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo as Chief Justice last April 5.

Sandiganbayan
The Sandiganbayan has affirmed the conviction of former Cagayan de Oro City Rep. Constantino G. Jaraula, businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles, and three others for graft and malversation in the misuse of P28.8 million in Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) in 2007.
Aside from Jaraula and Napoles, also upheld was the conviction of Technology Resource Center (TRC) Group Manager Ma. Rosalinda Masongsong Lacsamana, Legislative Liaison Officer and Sales and Promotion Officer V Belina A. Concepcion, and private individual Mylene T. Encarnacion.
They were sentenced to a prison term ranging from six to 10 years in each of their three graft convictions and were also ordered to indemnify the government in the sum of P28.8 million.

The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has opened the application or recommendation to the Supreme Court (SC) associate justice post that was vacated with the promotion of Associate Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo as Chief Justice and head of the judiciary last April 5.
In an announcement, the JBC said applications or recommendations must be received not later than May 10.
It said applicants and those recommended must submit the complete and accurate digitized version of all documentary requirements to [email protected].
The JBC is the constitutional body that accepts, screens, and nominates appointments to the judiciary.
There may be another vacancy in the 15-member SC if the High Court approves the retirement sought by Associate Justice Edgardo L. Delos Santos who had signified his intention to retire early on health reasons.

Two former members of the Civil Service Unit (CSU) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Kauswagan town in Lanao del Norte have been found guilty by the Sandiganbayan of three counts of grave coercion for forcing several individuals to leave their homes in 2013.
Rey A. Camanian and Lauro R. Diputado were sentenced to a prison term ranging from six months to three years and six months for each count.
They were the co-accused of Kauswagan Mayor Rommel Arnado, who was already convicted of the same charges on April 26, 2019.
The prosecution charged them and several unidentified persons with forcing Ibra Sambuat, Osama Sambuat, and Farhana Sambuat to leave their homes on three separate occasions on Oct. 21 and 30, and Nov. 18 in 2013.
