City officials want to move the Royal Oak Veterans Memorial 40 feet from its current location south of the public library to expand paved areas for walking as part of a planned park known as Centennial Commons. City clerk Melanie Halas sent one of the petition drive s organizers, Edward Burkhardt, emails on April 21 and May 4 indicating that enough of the 1,000 signatures on the petitions were valid to put the issue on the November ballot. ....

Cannata of San Francisco law firm Cannata, O Toole, Fickes & Olson, said in the four-page letter dated Jan. 16. Feldman s contract was set to expire in May 2022. (Courtesy Image ) SANTA MONICA, CA In a heated nearly two-hour-long discussion, Santa Monica City Council voted Tuesday night to again elect Mayor Sue Himmelrich and Mayor Pro Tem Kristin McCowan for two-year terms each. In a unanimous vote, the council re-appointed Himmelrich and McCowan. McCowan had indicated on Dec. 8 during a council meeting, before discussion or voting, that she may have inadvertently violated the Brown Act. A Brown Act violation refers to anyone who shares confidential information required in a closed city council session. ....
A BAD START GONE GOOD “Off to a Bad Start” was my headline for last week’s CURIOUS CITY column. Boy, a lot has happened since then. The bad start I referred to was the partisan, tone deaf votes for mayor and mayor pro tem by the old Council members, which went to veteran Sue Himmelrich and brand new kid Kristin McCowan, respectively. But the meaning was in how the votes were cast. Sue had made it clear in advance that she wanted the top post. Two years, not one, thank you. A lot of what you see done by Council members that you don’t like or understand, is done for prestige and ego, not money. For one thing, if you’re on the Council, you might become Mayor! ....
