Jacksonville NAACP, City Hall remain divided on MLK tribute events

Isaiah Rumlin has come to expect calls from the media ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
As head of the NAACP s Jacksonville branch, he got them again this year because for the third year in a row there will be separate citywide breakfasts to honor the slain civil rights leader where there used to be one. Friday the local NAACP will host the 34th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Empowerment Breakfast, while City Hall will have its 34th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast.
Both will be virtual. A parade follows Monday in downtown Jacksonville.
That s why for the past two years the NAACP decided to have its own breakfast rather than go downtown and shake hands for two hours at the city event, he said. And that s why the group will likely continue to host its own version in the future. ....

The District 7 City Council member was joined Dec. 30 by representatives, pastors and business leaders in support the $450 million project that has been facing opposition.
City Council member Reggie Gaffney, joined by faith and business leaders in Jacksonville’s black community, voiced support Dec. 30 for Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan’s $450 million Lot J project near TIAA Bank Field, a deal that has stirred opposition.
In a news conference at City Hall, Gaffney framed Khan’s entertainment, retail and residential proposal as an opportunity to create jobs for minority-run small businesses and residents in the Eastside neighborhood adjacent to Lot J and the stadium. ....

NAACP, OurJax demand city rethink multimillion dollar Lot J project

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In January, the Jacksonville City Council is expected to take up the Lot J deal and possibly approve the plan that could cost taxpayers more than $233 million.
Two vocal community groups, OurJax and the NAACP, are now demanding the city rethink and scrap the multimillion dollar project outside TIAA Bank Field.
OurJax, a new group made up of business and community leaders, is questioning the way local government is making decisions regarding controversial issues.
Michael Ward of OurJax says the group is opposed to the way the Lot J deal was negotiated. He said OurJax believes it was done in a way to avoid all public policy and disregarded safeguards that are normally in place to protect taxpayers. ....

Watchdog group OneJax joins NAACP in urging rejection of Lot J deal

The watchdog group OurJax on Tuesday urged City Council to reject the proposed Lot J development, calling it a rigged deal that should be scrapped so negotiations can start over with the usual vetting for downtown developments that seek taxpayer subsidies.
OurJax joined the Jacksonville branch of the NAACP in coming out strongly against the proposed terms for one of the biggest development deals in city history.
The NAACP ramped up its opposition by sending a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell saying the NFL should intervene against the proposed deal between the city and the development team of Jaguars owner Shad Khan and The Cordish Companies. ....
