Police in Story County, Iowa struggle with staffing shortages

Ricardo Martinez, Nevada s public safety director, says he has blown up his annual budget in trying to hire new police officers. While the Nevada Police Department typically spends $6,000 a year on recruitment, Martinez said he has already spent around $24,000 this year on online advertising for vacant positions.
The only thing I haven t done yet is billboards. And I ve actually considered that, Martinez said.
Full staffing at the Nevada Public Safety Department, which patrols a population of around 6,667 residents, is equal to 11 full-time officers. Right now, the department has just five officers working. The starting wage is $25 an hour. ....

Fire destroys Ames Golden K Kiwanis paper collection trailer

A fire has destroyed the Ames Golden K Kiwanis paper collection trailer located at 919 E. Lincoln Way, according to a news release from the organization.
The trailer was engulfed in flames when the Ames Fire Department arrived on the scene around 6 p.m. Saturday. No injuries or damage to surrounding properties were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown, and damages are estimated at around $10,000, club news coordinator Jim Penney said.
The site is closed to paper donations. The paper collection trailer next to the Nevada Lumber Company, located at 639 N. Ave. in Nevada, is accepting paper drop-offs. ....

Ames police: Death of toddler 'suspicious' under investigation

The Ames Police Department and the Iowa Department of Human Services are investigating what they re calling the suspicious death of a male toddler, according to a Thursday news release.
Emergency units from the city s police department, fire department and Mary Greeley Medical Center responded to a medical call for the boy at 3:24 p.m. Saturday in the 1200 block of Florida Avenue, according to the release. The boy was airlifted from west Ames to a Des Moines area hospital in critical condition and died Sunday.
No arrests have been made and there are no known risks or dangers associated with the incident, the release said.  ....
