YOUNG people from across the south have turned their hand to creating films in an effort to urge their peers to continue keeping themselves and their communities safe from the spread of Covid-19. As the further easing of restrictions are eased, the films are being released on social media to encourage young people to keep following the guidance, particularly over the Easter break. Organisations including LifeLab and Southampton Children’s Hospital at University Hospital Southampton, were awarded funding for the film projects through the Southampton City Council COVID-19 Innovations Grant. They then worked with young people in schools, colleges and youth groups to produce short films with the help of professional production companies. ....
STUDENTS at state schools and colleges have seen the successful launch of the 2021 HE+ Programme, run by Cambridge University with Peter Symonds College acting as a regional hub. The HE+ Programme is designed to challenge talented Year 12 students to raise their academic aspirations through a series of lectures, workshops and events offered by Cambridge University. More than 500 Year 12 students will take part in the HE+ Programme, which due to Covid-19 restrictions will be online. Students from Peter Symonds will work with those from Bitterne Park School, Andover/Sparsholt College, Bay House, Brockenhurst College, Itchen College, Oaklands Catholic School, Portsmouth College, HSDC in Alton and Havant/South Downs, Ringwood, Richard Taunton College and St Anne’s Catholic School for the extension programme involving university-style lectures and additional support offered by Trinity College, Cambridge. ....
Poppy Martin has achieved almost every conceivable award as a sea cadet. The 18-year-old is one of only six in the country to be made a first sea lord cadet at a ceremony onboard HMS Victory. As a voice for all sea cadets she has represented them at a range of conferences and events. Having joined up in 2015 aged just 13 she has gained a plethora of skills in first aid and catering. The former Upper Shirley High School pupil also boasts boating qualifications including coxswain, power boating and kayaking. She got involved, having been inspired by her mum who was also once a cadet. ....
