Alston Farmer hoping for strong lambing season


A KEEPER of North of England Mule ewes say he’s looking forward to a strong lambing season over the next few weeks.
While many lowland sheep farmers across the UK have already completed or are nearing the end of the of the 2021 lambing season, the more up country custodians of the countryside, among them members of NEMSA – the North of England Mule Sheep Association - are still in full swing now that Spring has finally sprung.
Chris Harrison - the NEMSA national chairman says a relatively calm winter followed by an expected increase in staycations over the summer show lamb as having great potential around the area. ....

Prime lambs average hits £3 per kilo at Skipton Auction Mart


PRIME lamb trade at Skipton Auction Mart stepped up yet another gear on Monday, as the 2,258 prime and lightweight hoggs forward averaged over £3 per kilo at 302p/kg (SQQ 308p), or £130.44 per head.
All classes were dearer by some margin, especially heavy lambs and commercial handy to medium weights, with 37-43kg Continentals and other lowland-bred lambs short of requirements and more required each week.
The strength of demand for heavies was clearly illustrated when lowland lambs over 52kg sold to a weight range average of 280p/kg, or £152 per head, with the Hutchinson family from Faceby in the north-west corner of the North Yorks Moors returning with multiple top-notch pens across most classes. ....

EDEN Valley agricultural supply firm, Eden Farm Supplies (Brough) Limited has been unveiled as a new sponsor for NEMSA, the North of England Mule Sheep Association.
It is regarded as a fitting partnership between one of the UK’s biggest sheep breed associations in terms of numbers, currently with a membership around the 1,000 mark, and one of the North of England’s best-known agricultural supply firms.
