In a review in the Cornishman in 2004, Frank Ruhrmund wrote of her that “… there is a sense of peace in her work that passes all understanding … An artist who has never courted publicity, never owned a trumpet of her own let alone blown it, June Miles must be one of the most retiring, unassuming, and consequently one of the most underrated of the many artists practising in Penwith.” ....
PEMBROKESHIRE S oldest artist has an exhibition at Newport s The Gallery Yr Oriel until the end of this month. Exceptional draughtsman, sculptor and painter, 102-year-old Denis Curry, was himself taught by renowned artists such as Henry Moore at the Slade. Denis became head of sculpture at Exeter, then head of Foundation Art at the West of England College of Art, before moving to Pembrokeshire in 1976. Denis was born in 1918, he will be 103 years of age this year. Alistair Crawford from the University of Wales, wrote about Denis: In Denis Curry s paintings and sculpture there is a quality of brilliance, the use of light and shade, of sunlight, the sensitivity to the structural use of light playing on bronze, the expertise of a skilled craftsman. ....
Alf Stockham: visionary intensity Alfred Stockham, the artist and teacher, who has died aged 87, was a gifted painter in oils whose work never quite achieved the popularity and acclaim it deserved. Tending to work on a small scale, he made highly individual, well-designed, distinctively textured and patterned paintings, often of lyrical and visionary intensity. Intelligent, warm-hearted and generous-spirited, he had an ability to keep surprising his audience. Although there were certain subjects he favoured, such as boats and the beach, he would vary his interpretation from abstraction to broad-brushed realism, but always articulated with great conviction. His early work demonstrated abilities as a draughtsman of almost Pre-Raphaelite ingenuity, and his paintings followed this rigorous structuring, or moved towards the intimism of Bonnard and Vuillard. But as he grew older, his keynote was simplicity: buildings and trees, even people, were painted as evocative shap ....
