AN INDEPENDENT hotel in the heart of York has appointed an experienced general manager to steer it out of lockdown. As Galtres Lodge Hotel and Forest restaurant prepares to welcome back overnight guests and inside diners from Monday, the owners have appointed David Macdonald to oversee operations. David will play a key part in mapping out future business plans following two years of substantial refurbishment and improvements. Galtres Lodge, in Low Petergate, was originally two Georgian townhouses, which have been combined to make a 12-bedroom hotel and restaurant. ....

Rebecca Hill who has taken over as chair of Indie York. A HOTELIER will be championing the city s independent businesses as the new chair of Indie York. Rebecca Hill has been appointed to lead the not-for-profit business association which was set up after the 2015 floods to support the city s small businesses. Johnny Hayes who has been the chair since the group was founded with just 30 members has stepped down. Rebecca who has been an active member of the steering committee said she was delighted to be voted into the role. She is keen to attract more members, collaborate with other York organisations and work with stakeholders. ....
A YORK fashion retailer has spoken about the challenges and lows of lockdown in a documentary-style film. David Skaith, owner of Winstons of York, hopes the project will encourage people not to take local independent businesses for granted post-pandemic. He has also used it to urge local government and organisations to make the city as accessible as possible when it reopens. The two-part film, produced by milnerCreative marketing agency, documents David s switch to online-only trading after the first lockdown, and the stress of reopening, only to have to shut again. David, who is secretary of Indie York, said they initially focussed on driving e-commerce sales and promoting the family-run clothing shop across social media.
