LAHORE: As the second monsoon spell wears out and the third one enters the country next Monday, farmers and water planners have reason to rejoice: showers have eliminated water shortages, helped substantially fill both major dams and benefited the entire crop cycle (rice, sugarcane, and maize). According to Met department officials, the country received 23 per cent more rain between July 1 and 23 than its historical average. During these three weeks, Punjab received 17pc more rain, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 32pc, Gilgit-Baltistan 151pc, Azad Jammu and Kashmir 9pc, and Balochistan 49pc more rain. Sindh was the only unfortunate part that received 12pc less rain. ....
Rains prove boon for some crops, bane for others July 21, 2021 KARACHI: Recent rains may have benefited other crops but have partially damaged date palm crop by the time of harvest, growers said on Tuesday. “Recent rains were good for vegetables crops and others including cotton, paddy and sugarcane,” said Mehmood Nawaz Shah, senior vice president Sindh Abadgar Board, talking to The News. He said the province was facing acute irrigation water shortage and water level was down in the Indus River till last week. “This monsoon spell has somewhat offset the water shortage,” Shah added He said although the price of cotton was affected by a few hundred rupees per maund, the plants had gained from the froms. “Leaves were cleaned in rain, which also removed the pests,” he said adding, “Overall, the rains proved a boon for cotton”. ....

Every monsoon season brings painful memories for many residents of the upper-Sindh districts. Kashmore-Kandhkot, a small district, is one of them. If one talks about Pakistan’s super floods in 2010, it reminds the residents of the massive breach in the mighty Indus river in Kashmore that occurred downstream of the Guddu barrage. Eleven years back the gushing waters of the Indus river breached Tori dyke in the Kandhkot taluka of the district on the night of August 6th, spelling disasters not only for Kashmore but other districts which were located on the right bank of Indus. Devastations caused by the single breach until Aug 27, 2010, when the second breach occurred at Kot Almo, Thatta caused large scale displacements of people from flood-affected districts and riverine areas after floodwaters touched two banks. Deaths and damages to properties were reported. ....
