17 state leaders join Michigan s plea for state sovereignty in Line 5 battle
Democratic leaders in 16 states and the District of Columbia have taken Michigan s side in its fight to have a state court, not a federal judge, decide whether the state has the authority to shutter Enbridge s Line 5 oil pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac.
The states submitted an amicus brief earlier this month, arguing that federal courts don t have the jurisdiction to rule on disputes over state property rights even if the pipeline alleged to be in violation of those property rights is federally regulated.
Attorney General Dana Nessel asked Ingham County Circuit Court last year to uphold Gov. Gretchen Whitmer s revocation of Enbridge s easement in the Straits of Mackinac as well as her order to shutter the pipeline by May 12.  ....

John Geddert, 63, took his own life hours after he was charged with 24 crimes
Geddert was head coach of 2012 US woman s Olympics gymnastics team
He had ties to Larry Nassar, team doctor convicted of assaulting scores of girls 
Nassar treated gymnasts at Geddert s gym as well as Michigan State University
Geddert was charged with sexual assault and human trafficking  
He is also accused of injuring people for years through forced labor
He allegedly lied to authorities when he said no one complained about Nassar
Nassar is serving decades in prison for sexually assaulting scores of gymnasts 
In July 2019, gymnast Sara Teristi said Geddert forced her to see Nasser  ....

CALUMET Cafe Rosetta is temporarily closed as the Calumet establishment works out a resolution with the state that would allow it to operate with a license after it was stripped for the restaurant’s flouting of COVID-19 restrictions.
Cafe Rosetta closed temporarily on Saturday, owner Amy Heikkinen said. On Thursday, Ingham County Judge Wanda Stokes ordered Cafe Rosetta to work with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) towards relicensing. If Cafe Rosetta did not comply with court orders, the court could potentially impose jail time. ....

Judge issues Gaylord restaurant owner defying COVID-19 rules temporary restraining order

GAYLORD An Ingham County circuit court judge granted a temporary restraining order Wednesday that bars owner Ian Murphy from operating the Iron Pig Smokehouse while his food license is suspended.
Judge Clinton Canady III approved a request for the order while ruling on a motion from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD).
“This court finds that Plaintiff (MDARD) has demonstrated the necessity for immediate action to prevent the continued violation of Michigan Food Law, and that continued operations of Iron Pig Smokehouse creates an imminent threat to the public health. This court further finds that absent this temporary restraining order, MDARD and the public will suffer irreparable harm,” said Canady’s ruling. ....
