Margolyes, Goodes docs win Oz prizes


Miriam Margolyes: Almost Australian 
AIDC NEWS: A docuseries featuring British-Australian actor Miriam Margolyes and a feature doc profiling former Australian Rules footballer Adam Goodes have won prizes at the inaugural Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC) awards.
Commissioned by pubcaster the ABC, Southern Pictures’ Miriam Margolyes: Almost Australian was named best documentary/factual series.
The judges hailed the show, which follows the Harry Potter star as she explains what attracted her to Australia as a young immigrant and how she still grapples with being “almost Australian,” as a refreshing modern portrait of the country.
“Miriam was an unexpected and inspired choice who made it fun, honest, charismatic, smart, delightfully self-deprecating and masterful with her interactions,” they said. ....

AIDC 2021: Why SBS loves hosts

Noni Hazlehurst, Justine Clarke and Indira Naidoo have all fronted recent documentaries on SBS, which is proving a winning formula for the public broadcaster.
SBS Head of Documentaries, Joseph Maxwell said, “When we have a presenter they can become a lynchpin for Publicity, be that on radio, other networks -and often we do get on other networks with our publicity.
“That gives us greater exposure and coverage. So there is that advantage with a presenter as well, of course, the authority they bring and insight they bring into that subject.” ....

Documentary filmmakers ready for AIDC 2021


Rachel Griffiths & Craig Reucassel are amongst speakers at next week’s Australian International Documentary Conference.
This year’s event, a year on from when pandemic concerns were starting to impact the 2020 Conference, will be held online.

Featured Filmmakers:
Irene Proebsting and Barry Brown were active members of the eclectic and iconoclastic Melbourne Super 8 Film Group and have been collaborating on hybrid analogue digital media projects since the 1990s. Their films and soundtracks deploy numerous compositional strategies including appropriation, chance, collage and improvisation, and utilise a variety of idioms ranging from evocative post-verity dramaturgies to absurdist agitprop narratives. Their works have been exhibited in a number of experimental screenings such as the Night Projection Window at the CCP, discreet montage at the Latrobe Regional Gallery, and Obscure Transmissions as part of the RetrOZ! Series, at the Artist Film Workshop. ....
