PBS is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Michael Gudinski. It is almost impossible to sum up the huge impact Michael had on the music industry locally, nationally and internationally.
Michael was a larger than life character, who championed local talent and built his successful Mushroom empire into one of the most influential independent industry groups in the world.
Over the many years of his industry involvement, Michael had always shown affection towards PBS. In 2003 Michael spoke about his appreciation for the work the station does in supporting new acts. “PBS is, and has been, the starting point for Australian artists, they recognise that they need you and know that your hand is there for them - If I’ve heard it from one, I’ve heard it from 100.” ....

When COVID-19 shut our production down in its tracks in early March 2020, we didn’t let this preverbal flat tyre from keep us from doing what we love. We kept rehearsing via digital technologies and continued to work tirelessly during lock down to finish over 200 spectacular costumes, and styling the 100 wigs that will now get to grace the stage April 2021 as part of Midsumma Festival, in this
flirty fun and fabulous Victorian Amateur Premiere of Priscilla Queen of the Desert – The Musical.
In 1994 an independent Aussie film about two drag queens and a transsexual woman on a fabulous road trip travelling across the desert from Sydney to the Alice became an unlikely worldwide box-office – and Oscar-winning – hit. In 2006 the stage production premiered at the Lyric theatre in Sydney and has made its way to London’s West End, Broadway now to Pakenham in 2021. Of Stars and Birds was written after an invitation to contribute to Ensemble Offspring s birdsong collection. As a new composer in the earliest development stages of my craft, I worried how my work would stand alongside the pieces of experienced, accomplished composers who had already contributed to this series. As an Aboriginal musician with limited music theory, I also worried if I could create something of a standard suitable for the ensemble and its project partners. ....
