Music Australia: Building innovative partnerships for online access to music made, played and recorded in Australia

1 April 2008 - 12:00
This paper examines some of the strategies used by the National Library of Australia to build a collaborative music service on a national scale, and in particular the challenges faced in building online audio content.  It demonstrates the opportunities that a government-business partnership provides to break through some of the existing barriers in providing access to resources.  And it reflects upon the volatility in the music industry that creates ongoing challenges for archiving, resource discovery, online access to and delivery of musical sound.
What is Music Australia and how does it work?
Music Australia is a free resource discovery service to Australian music, hosted by the National Library of Australia and representing more than 50 cultural organisations around the nation. The service crosses the boundaries of formats, and institutions, to present a comprehensive showcase of Australian musical culture from the earliest published music to ....

Getting the whole picture: Finding a common language between digital preservation and conservation

1 August 2012 - 12:00
From the outset, digital preservation and conservation seem to be two very different professions. This paper explores the idea that both traditional and digital conservators not only have many commonalties but also an invaluable knowledge bank of their own areas of expertise, which should be shared between these seemingly distinct communities. Preservation Services and the Digital Preservation team from the National Library of Australia (NLA) discuss the commonalities between the two professions. Digital preservation is a relatively young and innovative discipline, while conservation has undergone its own phases of growth and innovation to become a profession that is steeped in tried and tested methodologies and techniques. This analysis of the common challenges shared by the Conservation team and the Digital Preservation team at the NLA illustrates the lessons that can be learned and shared between the two. With multiple linkages between digital preserva ....

Collaboration across the collecting sectors

This lecture examines opportunities for better collaboration between museums, archives and libraries. It will cover:
How improved collaboration (especially in discovery services and data exchange) can deliver significant benefits to collecting institutions users;
Some of the models and standards that support collaboration; and
The National Library s new discovery service, Trove, and how it will help improve collaboration.
Introduction
Today I will discuss the opportunities for collaboration among the different sectors that constitute Australia’s collecting institutions: in other words, collaboration among the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) sectors.
I have always believed that these sectors could do more than they have done to foster collaboration, where that will benefit our users. ....
