Defenseman James Marooney and forward Austin Pooley of the Ohio State men’s hockey team have been honored as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars.
Marooney, a sophomore in 2020-21, is a sport industry major. Pooley earned his bachelor’s degree in finance in Spring 2021 after finishing his senior campaign. The duo also earned Academic All-Big Ten and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete accolades. Pooley is a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must have earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.00

Heading into the final games of the regular season this week, the six members of the Ohio State men’s hockey Class of 2021 will be highlighted. The group has been a part of a Big Ten regular season title, NCAA Frozen Four trip and two NCAA Tournament appearances (along with a probable third straight trip in 2020 before the season was ended because of the COVID pandemic).
The Buckeyes host Arizona State in Value City Arena at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with the games streamed through BTN Plus and on Ohio State Radio.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind 32 saves from Tommy Nappier, the Ohio State men’s hockey team skated to a 3-2 win over No. 7/6 Michigan Friday in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes led 2-1 after the first period and 3-1 after the second, on goals from Gustaf Westlund, Jaedon Leslie and Patrick Guzzo, with Layton Ahac picking up two assists.
The Buckeyes (6-14-1, 6-13-0-0-1-0 B1G) and Wolverines (11-8-0, 9-8-0-1-0-0 B1G) will close the weekend and regular season series at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be streamed through BTN Plus and on Ohio State Radio.
