9 & 10 News July 15, 2021 According to the LMAS Health Department, over the last two weeks, the Upper Peninsula has seen only 82 new cases of COVID. Public Information Officer with LMAS, Kerry Ott, said vaccinations have been down as well, with the department only administering just over 200 since July 1, which is lower than usual. July 1 was also when Governor Whitmer announced the vaccine lottery. “We don’t know if it’s because people don’t want to be bribed to take the shot, but also it may just be holiday and vacations too, but we just continue to chug along and make opportunities available,” said Ott. ....
9 & 10 News June 29, 2021 War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie is running out of time to use over 1,000 Pfizer vaccines before they expire at the end of July. The number of people attending vaccination clinics in Northern Michigan have been dropping, leaving War Memorial Hospital with more than they can use. “The turnouts been a lot less lately,” said Austin Conway, Emergency Management Director of War Memorial Hospital. “We get anywhere from 6 to 30 people maximum nowadays at a Wednesday clinic versus the thousands we had at these larger clinics.” The hospital has been holding clinics every Wednesday, but less people are showing up. ....
Contributed SAULT STE. MARIE War Memorial has installed bleeding control kits throughout the hospital and at offsite clinic locations. Each kit contains resources to stop or control bleeding such as tourniquets, trauma bandages, gauze, shears, an emergency blanket, and personal protective equipment. Stop the Bleed is a nationwide initiative that was launched in 2015. The goal of Stop the Bleed is to encourage bystanders to provide immediate assistance to help stop bleeding in injured persons before trained responders arrive. Bleeding control kits are intended to provide the essential life-saving equipment necessary in a major trauma event. Each kit is mounted to the wall and contains a laminated sheet inside with simple instructions for civilians to use in unfortunate but realistic scenarios. ....
9 & 10 News March 31, 2021 Governor Whitmer announced Wednesday they are increasing their vaccination goal across Michigan from 50,000 to 100,000 shots per day. This comes as cases continue to rise across the state. “We are going gangbusters on the vaccines and that’s really where people really need to have their personal responsibility following the protocols and getting themselves vaccinated,” she said. “It’s the best thing for them individually and for our economy.” Emergency Director of War Memorial Hospital Austin Conway said they’ve been seeing alarming case numbers as of late. “Over the last few days we have seen a spike in our testing as well as our positivity rates, and that’s alarming so getting the vaccine and increasing our output is very important to us,” he said. ....
