It was almost spring last year, and Marian Luntz was hearing all the buzz from the big international winter film festivals. Sydney. Rotterdam. Berlin. As longtime film curator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Luntz was doing what she does every year: tracking films she might like to program for the museum. MFAH was off to a strong 2020. The Oscar nominees for Documentary Shorts are usually very difficult to watch. I mean, they re uniformly excellent, but the films are always extremely topical and unflinchingly brutal in their dedication to truth. At Tin Pan Theater over the last six or seven years, I ve been lucky enough to watch most of the Oscar Shorts (including the Animation and Live Action ones), but I m not sure any single short film affected me the way Skye Fitzgerald and Michael Scheuerman s Hunger Ward did.
Hunger Ward focuses on the famine in Yemen, ongoing since 2016 and beginning during the Yemini Civil War. As of 2018, more than 85,000 children have died with UNICEF calling the famine the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. The film follows health care workers Dr. Aida Alsadeeq and Nurse Mekkia Mahdi across two hospitals as they struggle to combat child malnutrition. It s filled with stories and imagery that will stay with me for the rest of my life. ....

It’s Oscar season, which means around here it’s Oscar
Shorts season! For the 35th year, the Wichita Public Library is offering the animated, live action, and documentary short films that are up for Academy Awards, and while nowadays they’re all readily accessible to just about anyone, anywhere, we Wichitans do like to remind people that for decades, Wichita was the
only place outside New York and L.A. where people could see the shorts programs.

Like just about everything, this year, the library’s exhibitions are going online, and for the next 30 days starting today, you can watch any or all of the shorts by registering through the library’s website there are a limited number of spots, and registration has been open for a while, but if you hop on it soon, you should be able to get in without a problem. ....
