By City News Service Jul 12, 2021 SANTA ANA (CNS) - A 46-year-old man was charged today with several felonies related to the detonation of illegal fireworks in Garden Grove that injured nine people, including an 8-year-old boy. Frank Lazcano Lopez of Santa Ana was charged with two counts of use of a destructive device causing mayhem and great bodily injury, a count of use of a destructive device causing bodily injury and a count of dissuading a witness by force, all felonies. Police were called to the 13800 block of Rosita Place in Garden Grove about 9:30 p.m. on the Fourth of July regarding an explosion that blew out windows at an apartment complex and shattered the windows on a vehicle, police said. ....
Suspect Arrested After Fatal DUI Crash, Charged with Murder Posted On Rafu Wire and Staff Reports SANTA ANA Pedro Pantoja Jr., 29, of Diamond Bar was charged April 20 with second-degree murder for allegedly triggering a fatal wrong-way crash while eluding police. Pantoja was arrested on April 18 after he was involved in two crashes. The first crash happened at about 8:45 a.m. at the 2800 block of Park Avenue, near the Costco at the District at Tustin. David Kawashima, 62, of Orange was killed in the first crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene. As Tustin police were responding to that accident, the suspect fled. A police pursuit began and it ended with another crash when the suspect, going north in the southbound lanes of Jamboree Road, collided with another vehicle north of Warner Avenue. ....
By City News Service Feb 18, 2021 SANTA ANA (CNS) - One of two Orange County firefighters critically injured during the Silverado Fire near Irvine in October was released from a hospital today. Dylan Van Iwaarden spent 114 days in the OC Burn Center at OC Global Medical Center in Santa Ana. Van Iwaarden, 26, and fellow firefighter Phi Le, 31, were critically injured Oct. 26 while setting backfires to slow the spread of the blaze, which blackened 12,466 acres. Van Iwaarden underwent 17 surgeries and was placed in a medically induced coma and intubated at one point, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. He will now begin rehabilitation at UC Irvine Medical Center. ....
